Fine Dining

Paso Robles is an amazing town indeed. It is hard to believe that it is graced with such divine restaurants all in walking distance from the inn. Here is a list of what Margot thinks is very special. When you reserve or go, make sure to mention The Vine Street Inn.
If you wish to take a pedicab instead of walking, please tell Margot so that she can reserve one for you. It's fun.

Open Tue-Sat 11am-2pm, 5pm-10pm; Sun 9am-2pm, 5pm-10pm

French

Bistro Laurent----1202 Pine–226-8191 (closed Sun. & Mon.)
http://www.bistrolaurent.com/

The general consensus is that it’s one of the finest in the area. The chef(Laurent Grangien)is French. It was written up in the LA Times awhile ago as "the best restaurant on the Central Coast". Yummy for lunch or dinner. Sit inside or outside on the lovely patio in back. This restaurant is housed in a very historic old brick building and the inside is historic in feel with lots of wood. Wine only. Reservations seriously recommended.

Pan Olivo—1344 Park-239-3366
http://www.panolivo.com/

French Mediterranean. The owners(the Cops) are French. Yummy French pastries can be found here and the faire is light French for breakfast and lunch. Wine only served. Outdoor seating. Dinner served on Friday and Saturday 5PM to 9PM.

Spanish

Villa Creek—Pine and 12th—238-3000
http://www.villacreek.com/

Spanish decor. Dining in and out. There is a full lively bar partially inside and partially outside over looking the central park. Sit in the bar area, have some tapas and livations, and watch the Paso world wander by. There is a nice dining room inside and an outside back patio with a free standing fire chimney fireplace. Reservations recommended for busy times.

Italian

Buona Tavola—943 Spring St.—237-0600
http://www.btslo.com/

Wonderful Northern Italian fare. Sit at the intimate full bar, or at the inside dining area as well as on the small outdoor patio on the street. The Italian chef/owner Antonio Varia is fabulous. There’s another Buona Tavola in San Luis Obispo that has a gorgeous outdoor patio in which to dine. I sometime ago had dinner there and met Rachel Ray there doing a TV presentation. I had a very interesting evening with her.(You can ask me about that as well). Reservations seriously recommended.

Plain American Fare

McClintocks-on Park –1234 Park-----238-2233

Big full bar and fun American dining. for breakfast, items like Cowboy Benedict (the benedict is country gravy), Joe's Special & Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast,(7am on); lunch and dinner.

Odysey World Café—1214 Pine St. –237-7516

Good for any time of the day, you can dine in or on their tiny outdoor patio in back or in front on the street. Definitely kid friendly. They make delicious ice mocha frappes.

Chico’s 834 11th St., —239-3332 (next to Basils)

The breakfasts are reasonably priced and wonderful. 7am to 11am. But, it gets better. The lunches are really yummy, especially the soups. Chico is a gourmet chef for most everything, but when you crave fabulous stock and soup, he’s the best. The rest of the lunch menu is great too. Then comes the white tablecloth/candle lit dinners—it’s mostly fish because he was the chef at the Sea Chest in Cambria for 8 years-but there is steak as well. Dinner is divine. You’ll love meeting Chico. He’s so understated, modest, and enthusiastic. We are so lucky to have this lovely little hole in the wall restaurant with a beautiful park view here in Paso. Wine, beer, and outdoor seating.

Gourmet American Fare

Artisan-1401 Park St.—237-8084
http://www.artisanpasorobles.com/

8/8/07 Irene Virbila, of the LA TIMES, gave this restaurant TWO stars. That’s really good.

A relatively new restaurant in town featuring classic American cuisine. Sophisticated atmosphere, an interesting varying menu and a definite competition for the Bistro. The food is really fabulous. It has a cute wine bar where you can dine if you wish. Owners Mike and Chris Kobayashi make sure that you are happy with your dining experience in their restaurant. RESERVATIONS DEFINITELY NEEDED.

Bernick's
835 13th St.---226-9400
(new 1/08)
Serious steaks for discerning meat lovers. Everything is a la carte. Upscale contemporary atmosphere with a very neat aged brick wall, deep cherry wood tables, black leather chairs, high cielings and a 30' long bar. It's usually bustling with customers dining at the bar or at the bistro-style tables. Hours: Tues, Wed. 2pm to midnight; Thurs.,Fri. 2pm to 2am; and Sun. 11.30 to midnight. Closed Mon.

Contemporary Bistro Fare
Berry Hill Bistro
1114 Pine Street 805-238-3929
This summer, '09, I've been enjoying sitting on their patio with Hugo at one of their 3 bar tables while listening to the Paso concerts in the Park. The friendly service sometimes is a bit rushed or slow, but their full bar drinks are yummy as is their platter of Tempura Shrimp served with Asian slaw and spicy peanut sauce on a bed of crispy wontons. That along with a pomegranate martini is just perfect. The bistro faces the park so it's a great place to sit, sip, and people watch. Dogs out on the patio are allowed. Other menu items are panini sandwiches; starters and small plates; hand-crafted sandwiches; salads and soups; entres and house specialties. It's open 7 days a week serving lunch and dinner.

Organic Bistro

Thomas Hill Organics

(Debbie and Joe Thomas) --1305 Park Street
805-226-5888 (the old Wine Attic)
http://www.thomashillorganics.com/home.html

Sun.,Mon, and Wed. 11-7 Thurs, Fri, Sat. 11-8 CLOSED TUESDAYS
Brand new in town and so conveniently located, is a restaurant that brings the family farm to you. Their farm is located in the East hills of Paso and is dedicated to organically grown, unique, hierloom varieties of fruit, veggies, and nuts. Want to know the origins, history, whatever that is grown on their farm; Debbie will divulge all sorts of info. So, what you are eating is totally fresh and organic; even that which is provided by the local livestock and fish purveyors. Of course wine is featured as well. A friend and I had a little lunch the other day in their charming interior. We shared a Seared Ahi Tuna Sandwich with bacon and aioli and a grilled cheese sandwich with Taleggio, melted onions and Romesco all put together by their super chef, Antanas Sudenas. It was delicious!!! They will be serving outside(as well as inside) soon and are putting in on the patio a big oven for making speciality pizzas. This is a fun and yummy place to eat. You can also order veggies from their farms and pick them up at the bistro.

Mexican

Papis Tacos and Gorditas–840 13th St., Suite C (really on Pine street South of 13th)
239-3720

Written up in Sunset magazine several years ago, it’s authentic, delicious, and homemade. It’s also oh so financially reasonable and the service ever so friendly. Dine inside or out.

Los Robles–1420 Spring Street-239-8525

10/07 They are back!!! Thank goodness. Retrofitting took almost 2 years and we missed them. Go there and feel like you are in Mexico. Not fancy, but fabulous Mexican fare. Breakfast, lunch, and dinners. On week-ends, enjoy their tacos al pastor/onions/tortillas done just right on the spit outside. And boy, is the price right. closes at 2PM on Mon, Tues., and Wed.

Thai

Basils—828 11th St.—238-9945

It’s a family run restaurant and it has terrifically good authentic Thai food in lovely surroundings with a view of the Park. Wine only and seating is inside–but it’s so light and airy with big windows that you feel like you are outside. Their food is authentic and you can have spicy and non-spicy food. Their hot ginger tea is a must.

Sushi

Goshis (at the Pine Street Train Station) 722 Pine–227-4860

Family run and Yum is all I can say. Fresh fish(not frozen) and a super Sushi Chef in Yugo. Inside seating only. Of course the sushi bar is always fun and lively; but then so is the table seating. Every now and then the train goes by and that’s fun to experience.

Yanagi Sushi—1221 Park St.--- 226-8867

Owner/Sushi Chef Jay Chung, world-renowned chef previously owned Ariake in Beverly Hills. Standing behind the sushi counter dressed in traditional Japanese cooking atire, Chef Chung with over 20 years of experience, is there to ensure the satisfaction of every customer. This restaurant features a wide array of Japanese dishes. There is also a separate room with a Teppanyaki Grill for steaks, fish foods, and veggies.

For The Younger Set and The Young at Heart

The Crooked Kilt–1122 Pine Street–238-7070

The name speaks for itself. Irish fare and lots of brew. Fun, boisterous and a has live music night and a comedy night.. Their scampi is pretty yummy.

Historic Favorites

El Paso de Robles Inn–a historic inn on Spring Street between 12th and 11th

Opened in Oct., 1891, it used to look like the Del Coronado Hotel and then sadly burned down on 12/12/40. Because of WWII it wasn’t rebuilt the same and so it has now a whole different look except for the Ball Room in back of the inn which still remains today. The hotel is very historic because of various famous celebrities who stayed there, including, the composer Paderewski who also was the president of Poland. He also originated the Zin grapes here in our area.

Lovely gardens with indoor and outdoor seating. Also an old fashion soda fountain bar to enjoy food and beverages. The vivacious drink bar is upstairs and looks over the Park. The historic tale of this bar is of a horse and rider going up the stairs for a light livation. Lunch, breakfast, and dinner is available here.

A Good Sandwhich/Soup Bakery and Café

Moras 1401 14th Street 239-1002 next to Artisan

Home/natural baked breads and wonderful big sandwiches and cookies.

Pizza

Paso Pizza -239-2730 and 238-6161—At Von’s center so I recommend take out mainly. I like their pizza.

Cheese, breads, and other goodies

DiRaimondo’s Italian Market and Cheese Shop----822 13th St. —238-1268

Walk in and smell the cheeses. No, you are not in Europe, but you could be. Over 100 cheeses from around the world–it’s cheese heaven. Ask John or Jean for slivers to try and buy your favorites. You can also order a delicious lunch to go of salamis, cheese, bread, etc.

Olives

We Olive ----Park Street

The next big thing here in this beautiful area are olives. We even have a fabulous Olive Festival in the park on the 4th Sat. in Aug.. It’s a big fun event full of olive , wine, and food tastings. and definitely worth while visiting.

Yes, there is a life outside of Paso (though sometimes I doubt it)

Not in walking distance, but nearby and definitely worth the drive

Justins Winery—11680 Chimney Rock Road, West Paso Robles-237-4149

This winery has a fabulous restaurant(Deborah’s Room) for both lunch and dinner. Dining is inside and outside. Brunches for summer Sundays are a must. You are on top of the world here in the middle of serious wine country. You’ll love their wines as well. Reservations are recommended and please call for dining times because they do change. Please feel free to ask me why else I have such an admiration for the owners.

The Loading Chute –6350 Webster Rd., Creston 237-1259

You have to drive to the TINY town of Creston (about 15 miles East) to experience this historic wonderful steak, prime rib, and hearty meat place.(They do have chicken and fish as well.) It’s down home and fun to dine with all of the local ranchers and residents. Dining is inside and outside. You’ll never forget it and if you love meat, you’ll have this on your mind whenever you visit Paso. Note the VERY FANCY barns/stables on your left as you drive out!

10th Street Vineyard Café------CASH ONLY

Basque Feasting-----Yummy and FUN!

Prix Fixe: $24.95—No credit cards accepted-----CASH ONLY

"Dinner at the 10th Street Vineyard Café in San Miguel made us feel as though we had been invited to a terrific party. Three nights a week, Caren and Dallas Holt turn their 46-seat café into a Basque and French feast, served family-style at long tables. There is just one seating, 7 pm (6pm on Sun.)and reservations are strongly recommended. Wearing red berets and banging a wooden spoon on a pot lid for attention, the Holts gave a preview of our dishes....While we were eating, Dallas introduced everyone to the bota bag, a suede wine bag that was tipped so a steam of wine hit the back of the mouth without dripping onto clothing...Our party lasted nearly three hours." Los Angeles Times

"Get there early if you want to choose your seat. Between the vibes of the grinning boar above the fireplace and the communal wine, it’s a wild time" San Luis Obispo Tribune

And Even Further Out

Los Olivos

Brothers Restaurant at Mattei’s Tavern-2350 Railway Ave.–688-4820

In the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley,(about 1 ½ hr. South) is the lovely quaint artsy town of Los Olivos. Brothers Restaurant, at Mattei’s Tavern, is a must stop on the main drag in. You’ll love the atmosphere and the food.

Guadalupe

Far Western Tavern–899 Guadalupe Street(Hwy.1) 343-2211

Maybe the Loading Chute hasn’t satisfied you entirely for a steak-fix. One hour and a bit more down the road South is this fabulous old historic tavern that has by far the best steak in the states. They raise their beef and whatever they do to it, it’s undoubtably the best.
